Hey everyone, I'm new to the Bay Area and I'm asking this question on behalf of my wife who wants to be a teacher.

If you have an associates degree in teaching, is it possible to become a teacher in the Bay Area? What kind of schools accept that? How hard is it to find a job as a teacher here?

Thanks

You have to obtain a California teaching credential. I have a vocational in Carpentry, but getting a designated subject matter such as math, or English without a 4 year would be a challenge. Maybe a junior college were credentials aren't required.

You need a credential and now you often need a Master's to go with it. Teaching jobs have been VERY hard to come by in the past 7-8 years because of the CA budget crisis (which affected education hugely). Districts are starting to hire more now, but consider all the pink-slipped teachers who have been "on the street" waiting to get back in. They are being looked at first because they have some experience and have maintained connections with their previous districts. That's not to say new teachers aren't getting hired; they are, but there aren't tons of jobs out there. My advice is to get your credential (imperative) and think about a post-graduate degree to help you stand out in the application process. Good luck.
