Hey all,

I'm currently a senior at the University of Kentucky (living in South Carolina this summer), and looking into planning a trip to see the Oakland Athletics play the St. Louis Cardinals the weekend of June 28th, 29th, and 30th.

I'm planning the trip for my dad, and one of my college buddies (as we're A's fans, and my dad is a Cardinals fan).

However, I literally have absolutely ZERO clue about anything in the Bay Area, (affordable places to stay, things to do, flights, etc.) and would love some help or input from City-Data. Everyone on here usually seems to be helpful so I figured I would make a post asking for some advice!

Thanks!

The Oakland A's play at the Coliseum, which is in Oakland (East Bay). It is also very close to Oakland Airport. The area around the Coliseum is not the safest, so I would recommend against staying there.

Although it's expensive, I'd look for a place to stay in San Francisco. If you really want to get the most of your Bay Area experience, it's really the place you should stay. Hotels are expensive though. BART can take you straight to Oakland and drop you off directly behind the Oakland Coliseum.

As far as flights go, depending on where you'll be staying, whether you fly into SFO or OAK probably won't make a ton of difference. SJC would be too far from where you're planning to be.

Like the previous poster mentioned, the Oakland Coliseum is not in a good part of town and you wouldn't want to stay anywhere near there. If San Francisco hotels are too expensive, you could consider downtown Oakland. I really think you should try to stay in SF though since you've never been to the area.

I agree, staying in SF would be a great experience. I would stay in Union Square, or the Embarcadero, but avoid the Tenderloin area.

Go to San Francisco Travel | SF Travel. They have a list of hotels in SF and things to do. There are also cheaper hotels around SF airport, some with free shuttles to the BART station San Francisco Airport SFO Hotels

You can get from the airport to downtown SF, the Oakland coliseum and elsewhere on BART BART - Station List. You probably won't need a rental car. Public transit is fairly good.

Wow, you're coming to the Bay and I'm going to SC the same time you are.

If you are going to stay here, I'd suggest what the previous posters suggested: stay in SF. Union square is nice, but very crowded and touristy, and not to mention a bit expensive.

A few suggestions for places to check out:

-Mission District (one of my favorite places in SF)
-Embarcadero (touristy)
-Powell (again, toursity)
-Golden Gate Park
-Ocean Beach (a bit cold and windy for my liking though)
-Marin county headlands (if you like outdoorsy stuff)
-Downtown Oakland
-Berkeley
-Rockridge in Oakland

All of these destinations are within roughly 30-45 minutes too.

What is your hotel budget?
Will you rent a car or use public transportation?

Thanks for all the replies so far!

After looking at a few of the responses, and talking with my old man. I'm pretty sure we're going to stay in San Fran. I looked at some hotels in Walnut Creek, but honestly for not TOO much more expensive you can stay in San Francisco and like someone else said it seems get more out of your experience.

Also will be using public transportation (so BART, I'm assuming) and flying into San Francisco out of Atlanta.

I live in Walnut Creek and while this place is nice and has a fun downtown, it is very suburban. And contrary to what many people say about Walnut Creek, there IS nightlife here BUT it's not as extensive as the city or Oakland. Walnut Creek might be fun to visit if you like hiking and very pretty vista points (Mt. Diablo).
