Honestly, I don't know why they don't charge $5,000 for an ugly, unrenovated studio with roaches. It's not like too many people would turn it down. There would still be long lines around the corner to live there.

It's incredible really. I've raised the rent every year for one of my tenants in Potrero (about 4 years now). It's classified as a SFH so it doesn't fall under rent control law. I'm talking 7-8% raises every year, and not a peep. I'm not over charging by any means, but it's certainly not cheap for the area. Gotta love Zynga and Twitter.

I have never understood why the self-absorbed tech yuppies, many of whom have jobs 40 miles away in Mtn. View and Cupertino would pay the premium price to live in a shoebox size apartment in SF. And many of them wouldn't be caught dead living in some soulless suburb where the rent could be about $1000/mo cheaper. I just don't get it!

What's WORSE, is that many of them would STILL have ROOMMATES in order to live there.

I'm sure SF is a beautiful city, but from what I've read you can either walk or drive around it in about 30 minutes. Yes, this could be a bit of an exaggeration, but it's not enough to pay $5,000 a month rent.

I feel this same way about Manhattan too.

Most of my friends that I used to hang out with have moved on, so SF doesn't have the same appeal to me as it once did. I'm ready to move on. I can count my blessings that I've been lucky enough to live in a rent-controlled apartment all of these years.

Here's an interesting article, in case it has already been linked: http://www.modernluxury.com/san-fran...-one-city-take.

Every time I look for a new job there are more and more startups that want me to consider a job in the city. Somehow it has gotten to be the last few years that the "cool startups" are in the city, in truth I don't want to pay higher rent to live in a worse apartment, and with worse weather, but if the job is in the city, I can't take a long commute, so any job near Market St, I would have to pretty much live in the city, (or maybe Oakland) to have a reasonable commute. BTW what is up with taking it out on people based on the type of jobs they have, people move to where they can get a job, and in this kind of economy (nationally speaking) it makes sense. I don't go and rant about lawyers, or executives, or arrogant finance guys ...
