Hi All,

I'm researching a book about Oakland, specifically economic development/crime/gentrification, especially especially in West Oakland. If anyone feels like talking/venting about this subject and wants to get in touch let me know.

I'm a freelance writer and radio journalist who's been on NPR, KALW, the East Bay Express, and the Stanford Storytelling Project.

Happy to tell you more if you get in touch.

Thanks,
Charlie

On the other hand there are people with real experience going back many years. My father was raised on Chestnut Street,
and I hung around west Oakland some during the Black Panther years. Later I worked on Adeline Street for 12 years. For several I lived off 35th near McArthur but got out of Oakland when we started a family. I still worked there though, until
1992 and had to deal with the earthquake (office was just blocks from the Cypress when it fell). Have been back to visit many times but generally avoid those areas that were so bad in the 70s/80s.

I live in West Oakland, but I didn't grow up here, so I don't know how much help I'd be...

Did you move here from San Diego or are you in San Diego still?

From San Diego. I live in San Francisco now (in another gentrifying neighborhood). Thinking about moving to West Oakland. I have a more specific question about gentrification in Oakland, but am thinking it might be better just to start a new topic.

O4kl4ND, Hemlock, happy to speak with either of you if you have an opinion on the matter.
