My fiance and I have lived in Cherryland for the past two years. We pay next to nothing for a cute little house with hardwood floors and a manicured garden and yard.

I know Cherryland has it's problems, but we're pretty clueless about most of them. Once, my car was broken into in the driveway, and there was a drive-by shooting two doors down (nobody was injured). Cars screech around the streets late at night and there's tagging all over the public utility stuff (but nobody seems to tag private property).

I know the Hayward/San Leandro unincorporated areas have rough spots. We're right by Meek Mansion and my fiance and I go out running and riding bikes to bars and the Bay Fair BART, even at night. Are we crazy? We kind of like this place!

How does this compare to other East Bay neighborhoods? People on here seem to rag on Cherryland, but don't these problems go on nearly everywhere in the Bay? Are parts of Cherryland/Ashland worse than others?

Well I would carry mace and not bring my kids out at night. Otherwise there is random violence but usually civilians are left alone.

To answer your last question, no, these problems don't go on everywhere in the East Bay. In fact the outer East Bay areas (I-680 corridor) are almost entirely filled with wealthy, safe and clean suburban communities. If you're comparing your area to the rest of the inner East Bay, then yes, it's a lot more common than in other parts of the Bay Area. I never see tagging in my neighborhood and never have drive-by shootings and people are never speeding around and screeching their tires...and I live in Newark. The whole stretch of the inner East Bay areas north of Fremont all the way to Oakland has a sort of ghetto vibe that tends to permeate the region, with plenty of nice and safe neighborhoods interspersed throughout.

If you're happy where you live and don't feel unsafe, then I wouldn't worry about it. Different people like different environments. If I was younger, I'd have no problem living in a neighborhood like yours. Now that I'm married with a baby, there's no way I would. I prefer a quiet, safe neighborhood where we can go for walks after dinner at night without any issues.

I grew up in San Lorenzo. I always forget that Cherryland exists. I actually like some of the houses near where you say you live (Hampton, Cambridge, Camden, Concord streets.) I used to have a co-worker who once lived on Hampton Road - he told me he would have people running (from the Sheriff's Dept.) through his backyard all the time.

Theres a prominent hood mentality with the youth, thats been there for a while. I lived there from 21-24 yrs old. Around 97 to 00. It was sometimes wild on the courts off of Hathaway and Meekland. Its never been a great place. To me, There just seems to be no opportunity, or good options in that area that other cities tend to have.. Hence San Jose, Berkeley, SF, Fremont.. etc.
