Staying in SF in mid August, possibly staying around Alamo Square any thoughts about the area?

Appears to be a bit far from sights, just wondered

Thanks

Depends on what you want to do. If you want to go to Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, the Presidio, etc., then it's closer to those things than if you were staying around Union Square where most hotels are. Also it's close to Japantown and not too far from the Mission. Basically it's centrally located. There are some crappy public housing projects in the area but they're pretty easy to avoid.

Alamo Square - I think you're talking about the "painted ladies" Victorian houses next to each other that you've seen in many postcards - is pretty much a residential area so there aren't really lodgings (as far as I know) that are right in the area. However, SF is pretty compact and small so you could get there easily from downtown, such as Union Square, or around Japantown, which is nearby.
