I don't really shop at them any more, but Thrift Town on Mission is alright. Crossroads has a lot of locations and is a bit more expensive than most thrift shops but they have nicer stuff.

Depends on what you're looking for. Hubby does great hitting the Goodwills and St Vincent DePauls for stuff to sell on ebay. Finds lots of t shirts for 2 bucks that he sells for 15 or more. One he got half off (a buck) and sold for 78... love those ebay bidding wars.

He's found some great first edition books at St Vincents. I've had very little luck with furniture and china/glassware. Found a cool 1950's modern dresser at Salvation Army, and a great set of 1960's china at St Vincents, but mostly I get skunked.

Consignment stores we haven't done much of....

Savers, the one by the Cow Palace, is by far my favorite. Better organized and higher quality than your run of the mill thrift store, but with the size and selection of the Salv and the other biggies. Thrift Town is also a nice big one, in several locations. Tons of crap but the odd find. There was a killer vintage store on Fillmore many years back which had well-chosen, really lovely '40s suits and the like, but in general I prefer picking out the gems from the junk. Some others on Fillmore which are more the Junior League type consignment places which you may like.

Community Thrift on Valencia, easy. I like the way their receipts are itemized for respective charities too.

For nicer, high end stuff in consignment, try Cris on Polk Street (near Broadway).
