Hey guys I'm moving from the east coast and I'm looking for a space in SOMA, Mission, or the Portrero area?? Any information will be helpful!!

What's are the area like in terms of safety

the range of cost of living

and some leads on where to find some quality places and the whereabouts of the public transportation system

I know it seems like a lot but i really what to hear a native resident's point of view.. instead of taking the School's information to heart

thank you in advance

Okay, I'll give it a shot... Safety-wise, those neighborhoods are all mixed - meaning they're very much a case of "good block/bad block", if you know what I mean. I'd say that Potrero Hill is probably the safest overall, followed by SoMa, and then Mission. But they each have nice & bad parts, so it really depends on the specific location. I live pretty close to Potrero & Mission, and actually work in the outer Mission once a week... I particularly like the areas around 18th-24th streets, near Bryant, Dolores, and that general neighborhood. I also like the "state streets" in Potrero Hill - like Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and so on. Only thing to note is that SF General Hospital is around 22nd & Potrero, so avoid that if you don't want to hear constant sirens. Another spot to avoid is the far inner Mission, around 3rd-8th streets, which is very sketchy (lots of homeless people & crack-heads).

Price ranges in those areas vary, but you won't find anything "cheap"... probably looking at $1200+ for a 1-bedroom in SoMa or decent parts of Mission, and $1300-1400+ in Potrero. Check here for the best rental listings:
craigslist: san francisco bay area classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events
SF Gate: News and Information for the San Francisco Bay Area
And finally, look here for public transportation info:
BART - Bay Area Rapid Transit District
511.org - Your Bay Area travel guide
If you want to ditch your car (which I highly recommend), try finding a place within walking distance of a BART station - or Muni express, at the least. Good luck & hope this all helps!

Eek... I just did a little research on craigslist, and rents are higher than I thought. Looks like even a 1-bedroom is going for $2000+ in parts of those neighborhoods, sorry to say! You might get lucky though, so keep your eyes on craigslist & SFGate...
