Facebook is also one of the most hated business entities around today:

Facebook hated as much as airlines, cable companies - Technology & science - Tech and gadgets - msnbc.com

...in the bottom 5 percent of private sector companies.

It was in beta-esque mode with a lot of bugs and less features than MySpace for a long time, not to mention the bait & switch privacy tactics. I had to navigate around clicking links for 30 minutes to figure out all the places where my info could be exposed to the public and hide it, and it refuses to hide things you've "Liked" still (at least, it did the last time I tried). Because of this mistrust, people have been refraining from posting personal things, and untagging themselves from photos, which ends up making Facebook not much more than a glorified contacts list.

That said though, I think early adopters were burned the most, and newer adopters have less expectation of privacy.

I've only recently started using my Facebook account and only because everyone I know is using it now. I prefer myspace especially for my music page which is totally separate from your main profile. I don't much care for the fan page thing Facebook has and that it's linked to your main profile. I like to support our Bay Area companies but in this case, if I had a choice I'd use myspace more.

I am a tech nerd, and Face book is definitely NOT one of the companies I admire... it has a similar resentment among other tech nerds I know...

glorified contact list is a good example ^

Zuckerberg isn't even a good egomaniac.

If Facebook shutdown tomorrow would anybody apart from the hardcore addicts really care? (not including the people it employs). Most users would move on to something else.

I sometimes wonder if FB will descend to the depths AOL once settled into.
