I'd heard that San Diego had a pro basketball team in the 70s or 80s....weren't the Clippers or the Golden State Warriors based here at one point? Im guessing they played at the sports arena?

They had both the Rockets (67-71) and the Clippers (78-84).

the LA clippers used to be a team in San Diego, but they moved to LA b/c the venue in San Diego was outdated and not a a proper place for a NBA franchise(the i pay one center/sports arena).

Granted the Sports Arena is old and outdated TODAY, but that was not the reason they moved.

"After missing the playoffs for the third straight year, Clippers ownership again changed hands as Beverly Hills attorney and real estate mogul Donald T. Sterling purchased the team in June of 1981. Despite the play of new additions Tom Chambers and Terry Cummings, the Clippers continued to struggle in San Diego over the next few seasons. Injuries plagued the team and box office numbers plummeted. Finally, with attendance averaging fewer than 4,500 fans per game for the third consecutive season, Sterling moved the team north to Los Angeles in 1984".

^^^ hum...Intresting. Your right though I assume. At the time that venue wasn't as nearly as outdated as it is now so those factors that you showed are pretty much the main contributors to the city's lose (not to sound like a jerk) but that move obviously didn't help the cause, the clippers still suck and remain under the Lakers shadow.

Tony Gywnn was actually drafted by the Padres and the Clippers. Good thing he went with baseball instead of the Clippers.

Does anyone think that San Diego will ever get a NBA team again?

Or even a MLS soccer team?

Because honestly, the sports arena sucks, and needs some REAL action, not crappy concerts, or stupid shows.

I understand the venue is really old, and too small to house a NBA team, but I thought the owner of the sports arena was going to tear it down, and build a newer/bigger sports arena, that will be able to handle both a pro Basketball and an NHL team.

Let's be real, the Padres have sucked balls for years and years, we will never see the Pads in a World Series game, ever, it's just the way it is, and that will never change. The main reason is MONEY, the Pads are too cheap, and just can't compete with big market cities like the Yankees, Dodgers, Braves, Red Soxs, and other big market teams that have a bigger payroll, thus enabling there teams to acquire extremely good players.

And I thought the new stadium was going to help the Pads get good players, boy was i wrong

Another big problem with the Padres, is they have this exclusive deal with Cox. So if your a Pad fan, and you live in Nevada, you can't see the Padres play on satellite tv, because Cox has the rights to the team. Well that's the Padres fault for likening sweetheart deals to the big local Cable company, it's a small minded, and small town way of doing things. Rather expanding your fan base outside San Diego to increase your income, encourage team support, the Padres just stick to the basics, and play it safe by being strictly local, and shutting out the corporate media like ESPN and Fox Sports which could actually help the Padres move into a more robust mid size market, rather than tiny one like they are right now.

Sorry for going off subject, but just had to let some of that out.
