Hi All,

I am looking to take up surfing. I am in early 30's in Solana Beach area. I am looking to take either one introductory lesson or set of 3 lessons in a small group setting.

I have looked into different surf schools and for one the instructor's profile was worldwide speed beer drinking champion, another instructor was named "Ace Cool", and another was clearly geared toward more advanced dare-devil surfers. That is not what I am looking for in a lesson. Surf Diva's seemed like a good choice but for one fact, I am a guy. I know Surf Diva's is coed but I just can't bring myself to sign up for a school called surf-diva.

Any recommendations for Solana Beach, Del Mar, La Jolla Shores, or Encinitas/Carlsbad locals? Do you recommend 1 lesson or 3-day seminar?

Want to avoid PB, Mission Beach and beaches further south that are crowded.

Thanks!

Try Hang Zen surf school. They're based in Leucadia. Small operation, but lots of hands on, personalized instruction. Private lessons, etc.

Hi Encinitan,

Thanks for the advice. I checked it out on the web and they seem like a pretty first rate school. I will try them out.

BTW My wife and I just recently moved here from Dallas, TX and your posts were real helpful in our making the decision to move to SD. We were looking at several places outside of TX and decided on SD. We love it here so far (been here for about a year). Beats the heck out of Texas. Don't understand why folks live in Dallas aside from dirt cheap real estate. Anyway thanks for the help.

No problem, glad I can help. I've lived in SD and So Cal (born and raised in Solana Beach) my whole life and I don't know why anyone would want to live anywhere else either!!
On Hang Zen, I've never taken classes there, but the guy who runs it is a friend of a friend so he comes highly recommended.
