Well, I mainly need help figuring out utility expenses and other fixed/semi-fixed costs. Coming from rural Indiana, there are alot of things we don't have to pay for. Such as: water- free, comes from well; sewer- free, septic system built into ground; trash- free, burn in burn barrel; gardner- free, mow our own grass, plant our own flowers. You see what I mean? (And typing that out made me realize how Beverly Hillbilly-ish I must seem!!!) lol!!

Anyway, I feel like we have a grasp on most variables like food, entertainment, gas, etc, because I have been able to find out this info thru alot of the postings you guys have made on this site, and other sites I have looked at. However, I have never seen anyone post about gardener costs, and it seems like water costs depend on the area you live in, so these are the kinds of things I need help with. This is what I have so far:

water- ??? will live in RB- probably 4s ranch
Cox internet pkg- around $100
gas/elec- sounds like I can expect $200+
Verizon cell phones- about the same as Indy, $90
Renter's insurance- ???
Mella Roos- ??? what implication will they have on me as the renter?
gardener-
trash- (thanks fishwz for bringing this to my attention!)
sewer-
any other utilities??-

Thanks to dweej, fishwiz, and 1ATP for all your help so far! Any other input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes! U R welcome. When we moved from FL to Colorado all the bills were crazy!! In FL we had one bill for trash pick, sewer, and recycling and water. Now I pay those all separate- annoying- plus there is no recycling here!! gasp. My in laws live in Indiana and burning trash seems sooo odd to me- but that is life for you!!! Is your husband getting transferred? I can't remember! Lucky you!!! I am working on my husband to move out to SD!

rent - a 2500 sf house in the area you're interested in would probably rent for $3000/month.
water- I'd say 100/month. 4S houses are notorious for their tiny lots - but the positive side of that is that there's almost no lawn to water. Higher if you like to shower twice a day.
Renter's insurance- $200/year?
Mella Roos- irrelevant
gardener- depends on your agreement with the landlord; may not be needed
trash- City residents don't pay for trash. I think that 4S Ranch is technically county, in which case you may have to pay. I live in the county and my bill is $27/month
sewer- included in your water bill.

Ah, the infamous trash service. I'm hearing both that it's paid for by property taxes that come out of the general fund and that it's free. Either way that fee would be pretty small.

He got really angry and started ranting in a thread when the city proposed instituting a trash collection fee. Most of us told him that to stuff it because there are no free lunches and if you use a service you should pay for it but 1AngryTaxPayer didn't think so. He thought the world owed him a free ride.

ACK!! I hope it's not THAT bad! Although, I did take my current budget here for groceries, entertainment, etc, and doubled it.

Fishwiz- my hubby is looking at a job offer in SD. It's his dream job, and the company really likes him, so it's pretty much down to us trying to decide if it would be crazier for us to accept it, or to NOT accept it........

If you have been wanting to live in SD and now the opportunity presents itself then go for it! I would of course suggest (never advice..advice means I know what I am talking about!) that you do a thorough background check on the company and if it is publicly traded check their financials on Yahoo finance. If they look worse than their competitors then I would make sure there is a plan B before you pack up and move. It is not unheard of for a company to hire people to make it "seem as if" all is well with their current employees only to find out a few months later they are closing shop. Not trying to scare you but rather prepare you. I really hope it works out for you guys!
