Hey Everyone,

How's the job market in SD?

I was looking on craigslist for jobs in marketing/advertising (my current industry) and it seems there are slim pickings. I think you can usually tell a lot about a cities job market based upon how many ads show up on craiglist. For example, just looking on the SF C-list (where I currently live) or the LA C-list and you can find a ton of marketing based jobs.

Are there any other job search engines you recommend for the SD area? I enjoy my job now, but can see myself leaving San Francisco in a year or so due to the intensity that occurs in this small city.

Thanks for your opinions or help!

If you are in MarComm / Advertising, go to LA, it is the premier ad market on the west coast. In San Diego you are looking at internal corporate comms at best (writing press releases or marketing copy)

I think he may be in 'Marketing' which typical implies there is a product being developed/sold/marketed through some type of channel.

I was in this field for a while (Tech Marketing) and there were slim pickings in SD. LA and OC have many more jobs.

As for Marcom (tech writers, ad generation, branding, etc), there may be a few more opps, but not many as my friend who is Sr. in this area up in OC has tried to move to SD several times and can never find a job that pays anything he can live of of. Again, OC or LA is better.

Essentially, there are alot of small companies in San Diego, so some of these corp type jobs are not that plentiful. In San Diego, you may do marcom, but you may also be a web programmer and a purchasing person, all wrapped into one. For some people, they thrive on this....

Now there are a few like HP (Printer Group), Sony (Video) and Qualcomm, but they are tough to crack.

You may also want to find a discussion board for your particular industry and network there.

Yes, I'm in Marcom. Specifically, media planning as of now. I know that San Diego wouldn't be the best place for that, but perhaps something in Marcom. I think this might be one of those situations where unless I find the right job at the right time I won't be moving to San Diego.

Thanks for the responses though. Perhaps something will come at some point.

I would research companies in San Diego you may want to work at, then call the main number and ask to speak with the Marcom manager.

Marcom managers don't get beat up by vendors alot, so they are pretty reachable.

Smile I'm also planning on moving to San Diego from Chicago-Any luck finding a job Ravesox?

I am a media planner for a large agency in downtown Chicago with 3 years solid marketing & planning experience. If anyone has any advice at what companies or agencies to apply to, that would be great!

I am planning on moving in May, so right now I am seriously looking for a job.

Thank you!
