I am wondering if there are bugs like roaches, carpender ants, mosquitoes, or black flies that you need to spray for or that are annoying certain times of the year. thanks

The only thing that REALLY bugs me (hah) are June bugs. I HATE those things. They fly into the house, usually land upside down and are a major annoyance. I think they appear late summer.

Fleas (outdoors - and on your pets) are a bit of a problem because there is no winter die off. Also, ant invasions can be a sporadic issue. These two are the only significant pest problems in San Diego.

Plenty of roaches in the older sections of town, you can see them on sidewalks at night sometimes. This year was a particularly problematic year for flies as well... luckily, I've never had a problem with mosquitoes here, and I'm usually a magnet for them. I also second the June bugs. They're about the most disgusting creature I've ever seen.

As far as bugs go, in SD I notice the lack of bugs. The climate is too dry for them I think. And most bugs that you do encounter will be harmless, like june bugs, spiders and moths. I never really see any flies around here at all.

Lots of roaches in beach-area apartments. At least the crappy one's that I've lived in!
And rats...lots of rats in Pt. Loma (outside, not indoors). They love to walk the telephone lines at night. I think I recall they live in the palm trees. I've had the occasional ant issue.

The only spiders you'll want to look out for are the black widow and the brown recluse spider. I don't think much else is a problem.

Yikes! I've seen them on the telephone lines, too! And they are huge!

I know people may argue with me, but we do have mosquitos in the Summer. While the problem isn't nearly as bad as most of the country, they are here. The biggest pests for me are skunks and opossums. During the late Spring and Summer, the smell of skunk gets so bad that it makes me sick. Does anyone else have this problem?

Yep - skunks abound around El Cerrito. Through closed windows & AC, too! Yuck.

The worst for us has been the ants. Other than that it's just typical bugs, stray cats, occasional coyotes.
