Great menu of suggestions above. The coastal drive is great including the Elephant Seal area, Big Sur, and Point Lobos State Park. Note that Joshua Tree is likely very hot that time of year - please confirm that.

Joshua Tree looks super cool. I wish I could add an extra week onto this trip! We might have to flip a coin about starting from the north or the south. The weather in the upper states isn't supposed to be the greatest until July. Maybe starting in San Diego is the right thing to do. We might have to flip a coin because my husband totally wants to start in Washington. We have flipped coins in the past. It works for us since were both good losers and go alone with however it turns out.

I'm with Fran66... start in San Diego and drive up the coast. The best part of your entire trip will be the CA coast.

Must see:
Gliderport (near UCSD - fun just to watch the gliders) http://sandiegofreeflight.com/jm170/
Balboa Island (in Newport Bay - use the car ferry to cross the bay to the Pacific side)
Venice Beach (a crazy place - rent a bike on the boardwalk)
Santa Monica (both the pier and the promenade)

Love it!

The fine people of southern California are very helpful after they wake up and have their coffee!

I do truly appreciate all of the ideas and tips provided here and elsewhere.

You'll find this forum a tad more active in evenings. During the day, the majority of us are out enjoying the sights and weather you are asking about.

Here's another great web site.

California Travel Guide - Plan a California Vacation

And another!!

California Cities | California Cities Beach Vacation Travel Guide

Yeah, you're not going to have nearly enough time for Oregon and Washington. [You're not going to have a lot of time for CA. ] Until I started searching for you, I'd forgotten just how much there is to see and do, from the southern border to the northern border.

Just San Francisco alone could easily take two weeks. :-)

I want to thank everyone for sharing the wonderful things to do in southern California.

My husband and I have decided to divide the trip so we can see more of all areas.

We will save southern California for next year.
