My fiance and I will be moving down to San Diego from Ontario Canada and are looking for a nice apartment, preferably with a pool and fitness centre, 1 bedroom is fine, has to accept animals as we have 2 dogs, a cat, a bearded dragon and a parrot and is in a safe neighbourhood. Probably about $1800/mth and under.
Any suggestions or advice?

Many apartment complexes have strict pet regulations. Typically the dogs need to be below 60 lbs but I have seen some that allow for 100lbs, but they are rare to find.

There lots of apartments that are fairly close to UCSD. Try the UTC area. Its safe and will certainly make you commute to school fairly straight forward. $1800 sounds pretty fair for that area as well.

Try craigslist with caution and narrow your search by a keyword search "UTC". If the price seems too goo to be true, then pass, but if you see more results with roughly the same rental prices, then proceed further.

Other than there are lots of other places to live and that depends on where he will be working and what time of commute you are willing to take.

Just know that generally, the further west you go towards the ocean, prices start to increase and apartments dont get bigger with that price increase. The freeways here are a good indicator for prices as well. You will see in apartment/housing descriptions: west/east of the 5. North of the 56. West of the 15 etc.

Look in the Mission Valley area. A lot of those apartments allow animals. I too am from Canada and love it in San diego area.

I also moved from the great white north a year and a half ago ... Although mission valley is a nice central area, most complexes do limit the size and number of pets allowed.

Your best bet is go through Craigslist or enlist a real estate agent that can do some of the legwork for you in terms of calling up owners and telling them your situation. Apartment hunting is a pain in the a$$ as it is, but with pets involved, it will be even harder.

If you are going to UCSD my complex would be perfect for you. The shuttle bus is right on the corner and the campus is less that a mile from my door.

They take dogs and cats here. All the complexes charge an extra $35 a month for a pet. You should be able to get a one bedroom for way under $1,800. Look up Website deactivated.

Let me know if you have questions.

You may have a problem finding a place that will accept all of your pets. If you have two small dogs, or a dog and a cat, it wouldn't be a problem. Lots of places have size and weight restrictions, along with limiting the number of pets that they will accept.

With all those pets, I think you might want to look into renting a small house. Most apts aren't going to accept that many animals (and types of animals), esp in a one bedroom. Alot of apts won't accept any pets, some only cats, but those that do, have a one or two pet maximum (dogs/cats). You usually don't have to pay a pet fee for birds...have no idea about "dragons" I think the going rule is if they are in a cage, then you don't have to pay but if they are out and about on the carpet, then you do.
