Stone Oak area to live. Safe, great schools and brand new medical facilities in SA.

San Antonio is a good city for families. Very family oriented.

There is a giant medical complex so nursing jobs are plentiful. mysa.com has a link to monster.com with ads for nursing. Yep, the nice neighborhoods are on the North and NW side of town but the energy jobs south of the city. Most nice neighborhoods won't allow a truck parked by the house. But don't know how truckers deal with such.

Thanks everyone for your input. Since I'm coming from NY, is there anything you think I should know?

Depends on what part of NY.... The pace is much slower down here, its hot all year long, people cant drive when the roads are fine, yet alone when it rains. There is only one major grocerie store chain around here. On the plus side the cost of living is dirt cheap

Are you coming from New York City like I did? I'm guessing you live elsewhere in New York State, but for me, it was very difficult leaving my friends at 13 & have to start over in a significantly different culture as the one here. I'd try to be as sympathetic to your oldest kid there & help him/her out as much as possible when adjusting.

Then again, theY may not be as tied to New York as I was.

My dad always parked his at one of the truck stops east of town on I10 and one of us would run out and get him, then take him back when he was hitting the road again.

To the OP: you are going to have to define what "affordable" is to you. Can't really help you unless you give specifics.

Affordable to me means a 3-4 bedroom apartment for no more than $1,000. Is that possible renting up north in a nice neighborhood? From what Im reading I see most likely my husband will be working done south due to trucking jobs, so what suggestions can you give me as to where I should look to live so there isn't such a long commute but at the same time living in a good neighborhood. Once again I appreciate all the input everyone has given me. You guys are great!

As far as the weather goes. Is it 100 all year round....or some what comfortable sept-may?

1000 for a 4 bedroom is going to be a stretch.

Anyways, moving here from NY will definitely be a change in pace. Since the OP is a nurse, I would suggest finding out which hospital she will be working at before buying a house. I would definitely rent first. Hospitals are scattered all over town but most of them are in the medical center. Just my two cents.

The husband's job shouldnt matter as much in terms of finding a place since he is a truck driver but then I don't know if the husband is "over the road" or plans to be local.
