In theory it's self-regulating.

Not everyone makes informed choices about where to move. In the General US forum, I regularly see posts from people who say "I made a terrible mistake moving to _____ because it doesn't have jobs in my field" or something else that they could have determined with legwork or research. I'm sure there will be people who move to San Antonio on a whim after reading in BusinessWeek or Yahoo or here that it's the country's best haven from the recession. Right this very minute, someone somewhere is telling themselves "I'll just move to San Antonio. Surely there's a job opportunity for me there."

Yes, but the second portion of my comment addressed the fact that even if they do what you described, eventually if they can't find work they're going to have to go somewhere else. If there's more people than jobs, this dynamic will over time balance it back out. Unless a lot of people want to start living under bridges here.

I'm not surprised that SA is in the top 5
with such a big military presence in SA, the economy is going to be more stable unless the government makes cuts on military spending.
Add to that, being in an oil rich state (Texas)

I'd like to see how the non-military economy is doing in San Antonio.

Almost all the top 10 cities are in oil rich states, except for Little Rock and Omaha:
San Antonio, Austin, Oklahoma City, Little Rock, Dallas, Baton Rouge, Tulsa, Omaha, Houston, El Paso

Paka, thanks for that link.

However, I think SA is STILL due for some more layoffs. Client checks are bouncing for the first time ever. I seem to have more and more friends out of a job these days. I think we still have another 3-5 years of this to go...

Great news - but really no surprise. All the Texas "big cities" are in the top-9 of this list, and rightfully so.

An aspect of San Antonio that I think is often not discussed is the "stability" of the economy here. We really did not experience the property value explosion and ridiculous credit-fueled expansion that many places (i.e. California and Florida) have in the past ten years. From the lofty heights of 2005, the fall for cities in those states has been brutal, with California especially teetering on insolvency. If we are all following the same slowly rising curve, I's prefer mine without the wild oscillations, foreclosures, insolvent governments and former middle-class homelessness you see elsewhere. We have avoided the "hard fall".

I agree somewhat that perhaps we benefit disproportionately from federal largesse, but so what? We have elected leadership that has seen fit to plunge the country into a 1.5 TRILLION dollar annual budget deficit - some places are going to benefit better than others. The military, and more importantly the legions of military civil servants are usually the last to feel the axe.

Things are bad all over America, but they are MUCH WORSE in certain places outside of Texas.
