Hi all. Do any of you have a rock garden? My husband and I would like to start a container rock garden on our back patio, then transfer it to the house we plan to buy at some point in our lives.

What types of plants thrive in a rock garden? We already have hen and chicks, which I adore. What other succulents do you suggest?

I'd LOOOVE to see pics if you have 'em.

Gracias...er, I mean THANK YOU! (Don't want relocaters to think we only speak Spanish in San Antonio.)

K, disclaimer ~ I know NOTHING about rock gardens. But when you say hen and chicks, do you mean real ones (the poultry) or a rock sculpture or ?????

I LOVED it when we had chickens! SOOOO wish I could have them now.

I've been a rock collector since the 1950's. I've built a few rock gardens.
The first couple of picks were at my parents house in San Antonio (1990's). The last pic is at a girlfriends house in Belleville, Il in 2002.

I'm starting to like this idea of rock gardening! We have WAY too much area to have to mow!

Just be careful with rock gardening in this area. Critters (e.g., scorpions and snakes) love to make little houses near or in such areas. I have confirmation about this by our "bug guy." I would think that, provided the rock garden isn't too close to your home, things would be fine.

For the record, I love 'em! (The gardens, that is...)

Ugh. True, dim! When we lived in Atascosa County, we did have lots of critters that loved the rock and sand (scorpions, centipedes, etc.). Excellent point.

Thanks for the info! Dim, I never even thought about the critters. UGH. Rock garden well away from house: CHECK!

gy2020, thanks for the pics! Beautiful! I was thinking more of rocks and succulents, but I love the color in your rock gardens.

Also, I went to McKendree University, right outside Belleville. I grew up about an hour away, just south of Springfield, IL. And wouldja take a look at that grass in the Belleville pic! I miss that!
