Hello Everyone,

I am a single mom of 2 teenagers. One of them, currently an eighth grader, excels in Science and very much wants to attend the John Jay Science & Engineering Academy at Jay High School. We met a lot of their students/staff at recent Science Fairs and they seem wonderful, to say the least. Does anyone have any input on this magnet school? I know the area it is in is bad, but I'd like to hear ANY comments, pro & con. We would need to move to the NISD for her to apply there, so obviously this would be a big change & financially difficult.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

If you like it, go for it.

As for the area, it really isn't that bad under the surface. My mother has a friend who lives off Westport Way and she's never had a problem in here 18 years of living there nor would she ever consider moving.

Thanks 210, that's encouraging. We're from a rural area outside of SA, so I guess "the big city" looks a little rough to us country cousins...

Can anyone comment on on the Academy's reputation? Any SA teachers have any input or opinions?

Thanks so much to all. Appreciate it!

You can still live in a rural area and be inside Northside ISD. Try between Potranco and Culebra around Talley Road or further out to where Bexar County ends just past Hwy 211.

I went there, class of '07, and yes it is in a relatively bad side of town but there really are no problems. If she enjoys science then SEA is the place for her it's as simple as that.
The campus is undergoing LOTS of renovations and has been since I was a freshman there, when they are done the campus will be top of the line. All of the science labs were redone this past year and look great and the school also sprung for better computers and lab equipment which is always a plus.
I say go for it, it was the best experience of my life, and I don't regret a single thing.

How long has this program been around? it sounds nice. I'm a grad of jay, 91. and the area isn't that bad. or at least it wasn't bad in the early 90's.
