My husband and I will be coming to San Antonio in March for vacation. We'd like to check out retirement communities. Does anyone have any info you can give me about them? We're looking for one that has an on-side golf course, club house with lots of activities, and at least 3500 sq. ft. house. I'd love to hear from anyone who has retired there.

My wife and I currently live in the Chicago area but a year ago we purchased a lot in Cordillera Ranch (we plan to move in about 1 1/2 years). You should definitely put it on your short list. It has everything you requested on your list. I would love to know what you thought of it when you check it out.

Also I have not had a chance to play the golf course and would be interested in any feedback from anyone who has.

How far is that from San Antonio? Do they have model homes to choose from? I went on their website and didn't get as much information as I'd hoped to. Do you know if that course is private or public. We're planning on playing golf 3 days of the 10 we're in San Antonio and haven't decided where to play yet. The rest of the time we'll be tourists

That area is a great place for retirement. Lots of retired military and long time residents are moving away from the city area to the small towns of Boerne (pronounced "Burney"), Kerrville, Comfort and Fredricksburg. All of these are North and West out I-10. Not a far drive and beautiful up in the Hill Country. I wish I had bought land out there years ago. Boerne has long term plans for progressed retirement....hospitals in the works, and independent retirement "communities" past the single family developments. It's very well planned for progressed needs beyond the golf course.

Shaines...sounds like you are a VERY young retired couple and may not need all that...but it's nice to know what's out there for the future. I hope you like this area....

The golf course is private. Homes are generally custom built although you might find some builders spec homes and resales you could tour.

Does anyone know if any transportation is in the works for retirees who live inside of loop 410--people too old to drive, or older disabled people? Ways for people to get to the doctor or grocery store, other than taxis? Are there these kinds of senior services in SA?

Thanks, but does the Via Trans come to your house in a shuttle-sized bus like they do in other cities, or are there just a couple of routes? Thanks.

Yes....there is this type of service, but I don't know of specific names. Look up "the Forum" Retirement Community on Nottingham or Los Patios Retirement Community on Post Oak. They have their own transporation, but they will also know independent companies. I hope that helps some.
