I heard that originally the edgewood area was all farmland from Belgian immigrants when San Antonio was a small town. When San Antonio expanded and grew around and eventually through this area, there was still a neighborhood that stayed all Belgian. Has anyone heard about this?

I'm not sure about Belgian, but the area around Castroville is populated by folks whose ancestors were from the Alsace region. The area prides itself on that heritage.

Could that be what you're thinking of? I've not noticed any particular Belgian communities out that way.

We moved here from Belgium, and I don't ever recall seeing anything on a Belgian community in San Antonio. If you do find something, please post the info here!

Cheers! M2

I definitely know some old Belgian folks around here. I'm good friends with a member of the "Grothues" family, who live mainly in Helotes. I think they all came directly from Belgium at some point. They own a lot of business and real estate here in SA, as well as some land in other parts of the state.

(To my Grothues friend: sorry if I don't have all the facts right!)

I remembered that the Institute of Texan Cultures has a section on Belgian culture in Texas. They have the page below devoted to it on their web site.

If it's the same Van de Walles, then the area you were looking for is along Old Hwy 90, just west of the 151 intersection. The Van de Walle Farms plant is still there, I believe it's where they used to make Pace Picante Sauce. Nothing else is the area would suggest Belgian roots, though the area is still predominantly farmland.

btw - I wasn't trying to suggest Belgians were anything like people from the Alsace region. Very different cultures.
