Hi everyone:

I am curious what everyone is paying for dental procedures, with or without insurance.

I have dental coverage through my employer. It is a delta dental dhmo where the insurance sends you to a specified dental clinic for services.

I have a cavity and request a tooth filling. I am told, no..that I will need a crown. The cost I am quoted is $765 out of my pocket..with the insurance. It is for a cerec. type of crown.

For a three unit bridge, I am quoted a price of about $2300 out of my pocket...that is with two crowns and a fake tooth in between.

I am curious what everyone else is paying for these services...with or without the insurance. It seems to me that the insurance should be covering much more than it is.

Another thing I have noticed...when the dental insurance does largely cover something, such as silver fillings for example, why is it typical for the dentist to say "uh, we don't do silver fillings" and instead do a type of filling (composite) that the insurance will not cover, meaning more out of pocket? Convenient for them, isn't it?

Sounds about ballpark for those things. Dental insurance isn't really insurance but a prepaid maintenance plan. It covers routine visits 100% but only a small percentage of crowns and implants. Many plans also have annual limits on what they will pay out so it can pay sometimes to delay a procedure until the following year. It boils down to what you plan offers. You really need to pull your benefits info and review what your coverage is for these services. Talk to HR if you have one and call the insurance company as well.

I have been self insured for many years and have probably saved money in the long run. Some dentists will give you a discount if you are self insured.

If you're adventurous enough, you could get your dental work done in Progreso for a 1/3 of the price. In a state of the art clinics.
To me, no dental/health insurance isn't worth the cost unless you're seriously sick.

Yes it does because if you confront any dental emergency then dental services cost a fortune.
