HEB does indeed have a stranglehold on this city, but IMO it's never been a circumstance of higher prices: HEB smartly knows who their target market is and doesn't want to alienate anyone. It's the secret to their sauce- Offer a concept for every walk of life. I applaud their business savvy.

What they've done over the years is run out CHOICE from San Antonio, which to me is the worst thing not to have in life. I want options... And thanks to new construction including Trader Joe's and Whole Foods, I'm finally getting it. It's great hearing that we have low grocery prices, but I'd still like to see a better variety of grocery stores and concepts. Slowly, but surely, it seems to be happening.

I read that this morning and was amazed. I've never felt that HEB had the lowest prices on groceries, but they do have the best selection. Do you feel like you're getting the best prices there?

Breakfast cereal is often the yardstick I use. There was a time when a particular name-brand breakfast cereal I used to buy a lot was available at Wal-Mart and HEB. The Wal-Mart box was 8 oz. larger and nearly $1 cheaper than the same cereal at HEB.

I don't believe the story. The research organization that produced the results isn't an independent organization, but rather made up of membership that is unknown. I travel frequently to California, and although gas, cars and housing are all ridiculously priced, their food in supermarkets is consistently of lesser cost and higher quality. There is clearly something amiss in this story.

I also want more choices for groceries! HEB doesn't have certain items that I like. They built that huge warehouse-size store at Bandera & 1604 that makes it impossible to get what I need in a reasonable time. So I go to other stores...or other HEB locations at times. I did finally get to Trader Joe's and it's interesting, but unfortunately not a good location for me to get there more often than every couple of months.

Where in California are groceries cheaper than SA? Are you serious? I travel to LA and the bay area bi yearly and the grocery prices in each market are outlandishly high and they only go up. Milk is over five dollars. I pay half that in SA.

I was just in California this summer as well as Las Vegas and Phoenix. Prices were less than California but more than SA.
