I forgot all about the TSO there. I went there a few times. The optometrist's name was Dr. Serafine. He was a very nice man.

Is TSO still in business?

For a while the HEB at Northwest Center was changed to ThrifTex, owned by HEB. It later became HEB again.

Wow, learn something new every day. Was this the only ThrifTex in San Antonio and what time period was this?

The HEB that was in Terrell Plaza on Austin Hwy changed to a ThrifTex for a period of time; early 1970s IIRC, then changed back to HEB.

I remember Thriftex. Late sixties early seventies I think. The Piggly Wiggly became a SAV U I think. If I remember right this was a move to lower food prices by no longer offering trading stamps. Stores like Food City and Fed Mart had lower prices but no stamps. You could get stamps at gas stations too.

Somehow or other I received a Food City ad in the mail recently. It raised my hopes until I checked the locations...and NOPE...there wasn't any anywhere I could get to! Just an error in sending it here, I guess. I sure would love it if there were more kinds of grocery stores. I guess the new HEB Plus on Bandera Rd. and Bandera is open by now. Anybody getting their excercise hiking around it? I think those Plus stores should provide more of the handicapped wheel chair carts and let all their customers use them!

Thanks for sharing that! I was another one that went there all the time. Loved it but it scared the heck out of me at the same time. Was a huge fire hazard.
