Hey all, my wife and I are going to be visiting San Antonio this weekend for the first time. We will be staying on the River Walk down town. I've done some searches of places to go but they are all generic and touristy places, or places that aren't exactly down town. We will not have a car, but can take a cab if it isn't too long of a ride. So my question is this:

For a young married couple that likes to go out, experience new places (bars, restaurants, etc) where do we absolutely have to go? I would love to know places that if we don't go to, our mini vacation would simply be a waste of time!

Thank you in advance for any advice you could give to a couple of "out-of-towners"!

There is enough to do downtown over one weekend, don't worry about venturing too far to see anything else if you don't have a car.

And I was going to advise you to dress warm, as temps will only be 50-60° and there's a 30% chance of rain on Sunday; but if you're a Hoosier that'll probably feel like summer to you!

Have fun! M2

Haha thanks M2! I am a Hoosier but we live in Dallas now, just taking a quick weekend trip to get out of town. Any place you would say we "HAVE TO GO TO"?

There's a lot to see and do downtown, it all depends on your tastes and likes. I would recommend Jim Cullum's Landing if you like Jazz, but you can pretty much find any kind of restaurant and bar that you're looking for! I would just walk up and down the Riverwalk until you see something that catches your fancy. But there are a lot of great places away from the Riverwalk as well, so be sure to ask your hotel for some recommendations!

But all you "really" have to see is the Alamo. I consider it the one must-see place in downtown San Antonio. It is such a huge part of Texas history...

Cheers! M2

Off the top of my head: Ocho (great food, drinks, atmosphere), Restaurant Gwendolyn (fancy pants, victorian-era date night), walk up to Pearl via the river (take your time- River North is beautiful), have a beer at the VFW post on your way back to downtown (big neo-classical mansion on the river), get take out and eat at one of the tables in Main Plaza (much more enjoyable than it sounds), lots of great places in Southtown (Monterey, Feast, Liberty Bar, Rosarios, Friendly Spot). If you like history/anthropology, check out the Institute of Texan Cultures. I love that place. If you guys like history and architecture, just walking around the area provides a ton of interest. San Antonio Neighborhood Tours :: Tour :: has some great lists for walking tours.

This is by no means comprehensive. Enjoy your visit!

Ditto all the above. I'll just add, if you can cycle, rent a bike (Blue Star, SA Cycles) and head up the Museum Reach or Mission Trail south to check out the missions. You can walk both too.

Also add Azuca and La Frite to the dining options in Southtown, and at the Pearl - Sandbar, Il Sogno, CIA bakery.

Of course don't miss the Alamo, walk by at night when it's lit up, or early morning before the crowds for the best effect.
