Have you tried the new self-serve kiosks installed at San Antonio area Jack In The Box restaurants? No need to wait in a long line... and the cashier can get orders ready for customers instead of working a cash register. I have only seem them at Buc-ee's until now. What do you think of them?

They've been in the PNW for at least a year, maybe two years now. Most of the Jack in the Boxes I've seen them in had counter workers who barely spoke english anyway, so it was sort of a win/win.

I saw these the other day on a History Channel Show about the fast food industry. They were mostly highlighting Carl's Jr. and Wendy's. They also had a segment about order takers who were not even in the store but located out of state in what amounted to call centers. Communication with customers via internet. If you think it is hard to communicate your order over those cheap intercom systems now just wait until they outsource the work to Bangladesh.

I've already had some orders messed up when I'm actually providing
the order face-to-face to the person behind the counter.

I'm certain that system will lead to more mistakes and what do to when
the order is incorrect?

...walk inside and be told you have to call Bangladesh?

I don't use the places often, but I find locally that Arby's messes my
order up more than anywhere else and that KFC are the slowest.

It depends heavily on specific locations in my experience. For example, the Wurzbach Taco Bell (drive thru) is godlike in their speed, order accuracy, and ability to put a spork in with the Mexican pizza. The De Zavala Bell is 2-3x slower and makes mistakes all the time.

Saw that same documentary, I didn't quite see the efficiency of outsourcing the drive thru orders but I guess there had to be some.

As for the Jack-in-the-Box ordering kiosks, I experienced it for the first time this afternoon at lunch. Honestly it didn't seem to speed things up a bit but I think it might once folks get used to them. Of course, I don't eat there much so it really doesn't matter; but again I think they are a solution to a non-existant problem. Usually the bottleneck is in actually preparing the food, not taking orders...and thereis still someone stuck at the front counter so it's not a huge savings in manpower there either.

Cheers! M2

That's a great idea! I have long wished for something like that. For years now they have been displaying our orders on screen at the drive thru and asking us to verify that the order shown on the video monitor is correct. We might as well have the option to enter the order ourselves.

"If you want it done right, you have to do yourself," as the saying goes.

It will be good for the economy to have more efficiency like this too.

There's still no guarantee that they'll actually make your order correctly, just that it gets submitted that way...
