Wasn't the Golden Stallion a gay bar? ...not that there's anything wrong with that.

GOLDEN STALLIION - San Antonio - Bobby Flores writes: "The Golden Stallion was on Akerman Road in San Antonio and was one of the big spots to go for country music. Many popular country acts performed there. There was the Canastoga Club which was a small club on the side of the Stallion. Mike Lord used to play the Canastoga a bunch. Back then The Stallion and Randy's were the hot spots for country. I used to work them both. I remember seeing Johnny Bush at the Stallion in the early 70's and when he came on stage the roar of the crowd was deafening. I'll never forget that."

Home sweet Home! Spent many a night in there dancing to some very fine entertainment. It was a fine place! Randy's once a week ...then either Quihi or Westernland in Castroville. Those were the days! I was working at Union Stockyards some of that time. Knew some of Johnny Bush's family. Matheny Bros used to play there too. Met Waylon Jennings in the Conastoga or whatever the cafe was called. Sheesh can't remember forever. Looks like an old girlfriends Mustang parked out front there.

Mike Lord Trio I think it was called played in the little night club off on the south side of the building. I think it was the Conastoga Bar ,,I'm trying to remember the name of the cafe part. (Rathskeller was in the Stockyards Institute Blg) I think. Wife may recall, I'll ask her tomorrow. The Stallion became a auto auction in later years after retiring from it's fun days.

Thanks for the pics Elnina!!

An' don't forget Lewbianski's (sp?) out in St. Hedwig. Used to work security there, as well as Randy's, Kicker Palace (Poteet) and John T. Floore's back in the late 70's/early 80's.

Yeah, I got to work the Sex Pistol's concert....<NOT so fond memories of THAT!>

Probably carded and/or kicked out some of the folks here..... Most of the time, though, folks were pretty cool w/things and a warning about minors drinking, etc., stopped the problem. Every once in a while, though, someone hadta go for a ride downtown....

Those were the days!! Dancing in St. Hedwig or LaVernia..going down to Poth and danced there too. Used to follow the Reidel Brothers all over. Golden Stallion was a fun place to dance. Remeber KBER Radio Station? I was a Honey Bear and when people like Gary Stewart, Lorretta Lynn, Conway Twitty, Ray Price, Johnny Rodriguez, and so many others would hold concerts at the Municipal Auditorium, we Honey Bears would get to meet them and also escort ticket holders in the very front rows to their seats. That torquoise Mustang looks familiar.

Mendiola's Ballroom out I-35 south of town near Von Ormy or Lytle was my first dance hall. Somehow my friend and I got in with the owners son. Saw Tanya Tucker as a teen there. Been to St Hedwigs and Floore's Country Store. Farmer's Daughter was on WW White .....I never attended. Thought it was for old fogies. Same with Hilltop (probably the oldest dance hall around) and Silver Saddle. Both were on S. Presa (181 S). Hilltop close to Elmendorf. My dad played guitar for a gig at Hilltop (50's or 60's).

Myself and 3 buddies went to Padre one weekend and came back through Pleasanton for the "Cowboy Homecoming" street dance. Mel Tillis was singing and we were drinking and dancing. I wound up in a car with one of my friends and 3 girls headed back to S.A. We somehow wound up in Hilltop's parking lot. One of the gals went in and soon returned and the odyssey continued. We, made it home eventually. Crazy days.
