I'm looking at possibly accepting a job offer in Sac. Would be moving from Vegas. I'm looking for some general info on the cost of living, best areas to live in (preferably close to downtown), suggested apartment complexes, general way of life, things to do, etc.?

WHat is your monthly budget? What are you looking for? Do you have kids? How big a place do you want? Do you want a newer complex or a kitchy building...

No kids. Ideally a two bedroom. Something newer would be great, but I also like kitchy as long as it's a nice neighborhood. Budget would be under $1000 a month before utilities.

Since I'm not seeing a way to edit the thread title or original past (and in an effort to avoid making another thread)...

Specifically looking to rent something in the downtown / midtown area. Can go up to and over $2,000 a month for rent, around $1,500 preferable. Must accept a small dog (under 20 lbs), must have a washer / dryer in the apartment, must have parking available.

So far in my searching, these particular places have struck my interest - anyone have any experience with them?:

- 800 J Lofts
- Capitol Towers
- Fremont Mews
- Cathedral Building
- The Orleans
- St. Anton Building
- Governor's Square
- 1801 L
- H St Lofts
- Lofts at R St

In particular, any of those located in a less than desirable area?

I changed the thread title to more accurately reflect your question.

Most of the buildings you mentioned are brand new or no more than a couple years old, except for Capitol Towers which is an early 1960s building.

None of them are in anything I'd consider a "less than desirable area," probably the "worst" if you can call it that is 800 J Street, which is right downtown, and it's not that bad. H Street Lofts just went into foreclosure and doesn't have parking. Not sure which lofts at R Street you're talking about: there are a bunch planned but not built yet. The projects on R that have been completed are few "SoCap Lofts" buildings (small three-story single family homes for sale, not lofts) and "Alchemy at R Street" at R and 26th. There's a loft project at 14th and R (kind of unique in that they are actual lofts in old buildings, instead of new apartment/condo buildings billed as lofts) that isn't quite finished yet.

All of these places are within easy walking distance of downtown, if not actually in downtown (like 800 J and Capitol Towers) and/or very close to Light Rail and bus lines if you want to take a 10 minute ride instead of a 20 minute walk.

Way of life and things to do: pretty easygoing but there is plenty to do if you go look for it.

This local company does a good job managing apartments. I was a renter years ago. Also, I have been inside most of them for my appraisal work. All are well maintained. Nearly all of the properties are in Midtown or Land Park or East Sacramento.

Good luck

The Fremont Mews are very nice. There is gated parking under the building. There are also several coffee shops, an Asian, great Italian, Mexican, and other restaurants, as well as a nice new Safeway, within an easy walking distance. They have a Web site if you want to get more information. There is a park across the street, which is OK during the day and every Tuesday there's a farmers' market in the park. The bus also runs on P Street if you don't want to drive.
