If you want to live in Northern California because you already have friends and family in the region, compared to coastal areas, you can buy into a better neighborhood for less money. There are some career paths which will pay a premium to live in the bay area and a lot that will not. If your career path is the latter, then Sacramento may give you a higher standard of living than if you were to live in the bay area. This also the reason you have lots of people who when they retire from the bay area move to the Sacramento suburban regions in the foothills (El Dorado Hills, Sun City Lincoln Hills, Rancho Murrieta)

I would agree with that Zen. I wish there was some sort of mass transit that connects Sacramento and BART.

If you take the Capitols, you can transfer to Bart at the Richmond station.

To me the problem isn't that there isn't a mass transit connection between the two areas as much as sure distance between the two areas. Given the distances involved, it just takes too much time to commute between most of the bay area and most of the Sacramento region. You might be able to commute from Davis into Solano county or from Elk Grove in to parts of the East Bay but the distances involved are so great that most other areas aren't really feasible for too long.

yeah, Capitol Corridor makes it pretty easy to get to the Bay Area.

I'm not one to commute. I like Sacramento's central city because of the beautiful homes, walkable streets, easygoing but active style, plentiful trees, and scads of history. The community is diverse and tolerant. There are a ton of interesting local things to do for anyone willing to lift a finger and find them.

And we have pretty good thrift stores, too.
