2 leads except you can't remember the names of the stores--and, if you want to get really fiddly about it, "modernist" design has been around since the 1930s (Art Deco is a 1920s-1940s school of design, Modernism dates from the same era.) If you wanted to decorate your house like the ones you see on "Mad Men," you'd definitely be looking for "Modern" patterns, but you'd probably have to find them at an antique store.

Which reminds me, there's a fantastic antique store that specializes in Modernist stuff in Midtown--Scout Living, on 18th between L and Capitol.

I've seen a fair amount of Art Deco furniture in the shops in Old Folsom--definitely worth a look. For example, dressers from the '40's etc. It's one of my favorite styles too.

Many of the movies from the late 30's to '40s feature stylized sets (particularly when they were portraying business offices) that are fascinating to watch for the Deco design.

If you can get Turner Classic Movies on your cable system, you might watch out for MGM movies from the middle '30s to the late '40s, since Cedric Gibbons the Art Director for MGM (and his underlings) often used Art Deco sets.

Not sure if you're also looking for lighting, but this is a good (albeit rather expensive) store for lighting and lamps, and various modern interior decorating accessories--they also do some furniture:

Sacramento Lighting - Sacramento Ceiling Fans - Lumens Light and Living - Lighting Experts

Thanks for the history lesson wburg. I'm sure the OP appreciates your "fiddlyness."

Hello,
We are changing from 40 years of collecting art deco to another era of furniture. I have 4 beautiful mirrored pieces: a coffee table with matching cocktail table, 2 bedside tables (these with blue glass) and an atomic table (not mirrored), which is rare and very cool. email me at geneandgaye@sbdglobal.net, if you're interested.
