If you make good money at your job, meaning middle upper class income, then you should try Stockton. While it has a HORRIBLE reputation, the truth is, if you can afford a great area, Stockton is nice.

Stockton has the higher crime rate (most recent stats...Stockton 70 crimes per 1,000 people; Lodi: 44 crimes per 1,000 people). The Holt/Gillis neighborhood in Stockton is your best bet for safety. In Lodi you will be safest in the Woodbridge, Rte 88/E. Kettleman and W. Turner/Edgewood neighborhoods. This data is from Neighborhood Scout.

I know someone that lived in Stockton for four years and did not think it was nice (in an above average neighborhood).

As for shopping, Lodi should meet most of your needs and you can always drive to the larger malls of north Stockton (esp. during the holiday season) very easily from Lodi. BTW, Garlic Brothers is a good restaurant by the marina in NW Stockton and easy to reach from Lodi. Lodi has some good restaurants downtown like Lodi Beer Company and the Rosewood Room.

I would be very surprised if most people thought Stockton was nicer than Lodi, but I could be wrong.

Hi all,

I'm reviving this old thread because I'm considering taking a job in Lodi and moving across the country. Would love to hear some perspectives/advice about living in Lodi, specifically rental properties available and which are the best neighborhoods to try and look for rentals. I'm in my mid-20's, female, and may be sharing a place with another newbie in town. I read through this thread and it appears the west side of town is generally safer? Any other insider info would be appreciated! Thanks in advance
