Okay, here's my latest and greatest question. Although I am now living in Texas I am originally from New Jersey. What's with the rattlesnakes? Are they worse in EDH? Can I live Rattlesnake free? If I'm getting out of my car late at night do I have to worry about a rattlesnake? I read about the snake fences I'll build one up to the clouds before we move in. Is Folsom a little more populated thus less snakes? I would prefer prisoners to snakes.

That is a difficult question to answer.

The amount of snakes varies widely from one place to another. By place, I mean small area near a creek or something.

You aren't going to encounter a rattlesnake everyday here, but you shouldn't be surprised if you encounter one at the edge of a parking lot next to a brushy field. Rattlesnakes appear to favour areas where water and dry sunny areas are in close proximity.

You aren't going to find too many areas in California where rattlesnakes are entirely absent. There are certainly more in rocky rural areas, but some of the vets here can tell you about people who have brought their dogs in after their dog was bitten by one along the American or Sacramento River. About 7 years ago a kid was bitten in the face after he swam into one at Discovery Park right where I-5 crosses the river.

My folk's dog usually gets bitten once a year. They have rattler shots for pets, once yearly all you need to do after a bite is treat for infection.

I have lived in Sacramento County for 35 years. I have seen one rattlesnake, in Folsom. It was dead.

I am just as scared of them as you are. I grew up in Alaska where they do not exist (in the wild, pets are a different story). I have been in southern California for about 3.5 years and I have only seen one, and it was dead in the middle of the street. I live at the foothills of the mountains but in a suburban area. I would imagine you won't really see them, but just be careful. You are probably more likely to see one in Texas I would think!

Yea I wouldnt worry too much about it.. I lived on 70 acres in the heart of snake country by folsom lake and only came across one a year and that was out hiking. Your chances are pretty slim. My friend loves snakes and when he moved here we actually went looking for them and never found one for him to see. I dont think EDH or Folsom would have more , it really depends more on the area you are in... if rural or residential. Snakes need food... which means rats, and mice mostly.. keep those away from your house and you probably won't have them around much.

I caught and killed one right by our front door area. Coming from the Bay Area, it was a huge shock to me at first because he was just in plain view and right by the front door. I was freaking out a little because I was worried about my two young kids. But after talking to several of the neighbors and people around the area, I feel a lot better. Most people around here (Lincoln/Rocklin area) just shrugged it off and most responded "yeah we see them all the time." It didn't really help, but I figured it comes with the territory.
