Canandaigua is at the North end of the lake with Naples at the South end. When we were looking to simplify, we wanted a little acreage to go with it and we were pleased with the location, affordability, and schools in Naples. The small town feel was echoed in the coolest small-town in America contest done by budget travel this year.
Your $400K house's taxes would run anywhere from ~$16K-$20K+ in various parts of Monroe County. A couple we know in Perinton own a house that's assessed at like $550K or so, and they're paying north of $24K+/yr. in property/school taxes (I think the taxes were $12K when they bought the place in '01). They regret buying the place, but for what they have into it they're stuck, for now (ROI would be maybe break even, at this point).

I forgot about the astronomical taxes in NY state. Glad my job (if I get it) will be temporary.
While I loved the Finger Lakes, I shouldn't have to be penalized for wanting to live there, by paying for services I'll never need, nor ever use.

It depends on your budget, if people take advantage of exemptions and challenging assessments. So, taxes can vary even within the same neighborhood, town, etc.
