I'm sure you can find some open mike nights around town. While I'm kind of out of the loop right now (I just opened up a game store in Mt Morris), I used to hear about them all the time.
While they don't play 'Big Band' music, I don't understand how people can say the music scene in Rochester doesn't exist when there are 3 radio shows that concentrate on local music (although, sadly, I believe they all air at the same time on Sunday night). Lots of small clubs and the Jazz Fest, yeah, those people bashing the scene must be bitter little emo kids whining that their trash punk band can't get a break.
What do I know though, I was only on the radio for 7 years...
