I've been reading a lot of the discussions here on Rochester. My wife, two month old daughter, and I will be moving there this summer, where I will be earning my PhD at the University.
I want to be close to campus and we don't have a whole lot of money, so the two areas I am looking at are the 19th ward and South Wedge. Any information on what these areas are like, which one is better, safety, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there! I have been on this forum lately trying to decide whether or not to go back to Rochester (originally from there) or Brooklyn. Well, with everyone's generous help, we have decided Rochester.
We have a home that we already invested in in the South Wedge. I vote South Wedge all the way. It is reasonable in rental and housing prices. It is close to everything else...most importantly school for you.
There is also a strong community feel, tons of restaurants, bars, stores, etc. are popping up left and right. To help you read up on it a bit more - this is a great resource for me - http://www.rocwiki.org.
South Wedge would definitely be the better choice over the 19th Ward. Much safer neighborhood in a better part of the city. Some moderate gentrification going on around there too, with home values actually appreciating as opposed to dropping like in the 19th ward. IMO Southwedge will eventually be the next Corn Hill.
Thanks for the info. I've been looking for something in South Wedge but houses are going quick there. Of the three that I've been interested in, they've sold within days.
I would not rule out North Winton Village in the Northeast part of Rochester. You can hop on 590 and be at campus in minutes. You get more house for the buck than in the Southwedge. The area is also probably safer on the whole - at least it feels that way to me.

I would also recommend the Winton area, very safe part of town.
Thanks again to everyone for the input. I've been waiting and waiting for something to open up in the South Wedge or North Winton area, but pickings are slim...in other words, sold within two days, major fixer uppers, or too expensive.
I have also been successfully convinced to avoid the 19th ward, though a $60,000 dollar house is awfully tempting.
I'm thinking about making an offer on a home just outside of Corn Hill on Troup St. I got on google earth and zillow and it looks like it's a nice neighborhood with newer houses and well-kept yards. Can anyone tell me anything about that area.
Not sure where on Troup you are looking but I looked at a house on Adams between Ford and Clarissa a couple of years back and that block was woefully bad. Do not even think about going west of Ford Street. I would not buy within two blocks east of Ford without visiting the place.
