Hello,

This is going to be a rather narrow question, so I apologize ahead of time.

Also, this is not a question asking whether there are any specific jobs open now.

My wife is a Cobol programmer for the State of California with well over 20 years of programming experience. Can anyone tell me if the State of Virginia still uses Cobol and if there are legacy types of programming positions with the state in Richmond?

I realize that there may not be any positions open now, but my question is really whether these positions exist and whether the state is still hiring Cobol programmers when positions open up or is the State only using contractors?

I am aware that The State Police maintain a variety of legacy systems in Cobol.

That is not exactly true, Neil. Many agencies have their own programming staff as well as contracting out.

Nooo. A few agencies have their own Data Base staff who write scripts as needed (Oracle,SQL,etc...). VSP(Virginia State Police) migrated away from legacy systems that relied on COBOL in 2009. This was done under the VITA contract. VITA is a outsource company.

What is wrong with taking a JAVA class? COBOL is great for moving large amounts of data, but it is old.
