Why does it seem like all the office jobs are out in the suburbs when they are advertised as Richmond -- i.e. Innsbrook, Glen Allen technology office parks? Is there a movement to bring the jobs back to the city center? I haven't seen this sort of deceitful posting in any other city.

I don't find it deceitful - Richmond area doesn't really matter

Yes - lots of jobs pouring into city proper.

Agree. Searching for "Richmond jobs" will always include the close in suburbs, as it should.

The problem with this sort of advertising is that to many people, working in office parks is drab and boring. Richmond has a lot to offer otherwise and should attract more employers downtown. As of now it seems like all that's downtown is a smattering of state government buildings and universities. All the IT jobs out in the west end should be integrated into the city center -- like Charlottesville has done.

Yeah, I work in a suburban office park and I'd rather not. But the commute isn't bad from the city and it's certainly not a big enough issue for me to find a new job (but I really love my job). I actually think it would be weird if my employer didn't advertise their jobs as being in "Richmond," even though they're not technically in Richmond. Most people from outside the area wouldn't even know the difference.

Nope. That would increase traffic. Downtown Richmond is old with many narrow streets that are on a lot of hills. It already backs up down there every evening. Having our jobs spread out to Glen Allen, Innsbrook, Arboretum, Chester etc is what enables us to have somewhat decent traffic in an area of 1.2 million people. And it isn't false advertising. Richmond is an independent city, not apart of any county. A lot of areas in the metro literally have a Richmond mailing address but aren't technically within the city limits. Also, there are plenty of jobs downtown outside of gov and ed. If you want a job downtown, simply do a google search of the address before applying. Easy fix.

All an employer is looking for is space, high-speed internet, and ample low cost parking. People are there to WORK. They are not there to take advantage of whatever else they "have to offer".

You're response is idiotic. Why can't the city attract employers to downtown? If they can't compete with the outer suburbs, then that is a problem.

The city is attracting employers downtown - but they aren't going to attract them all. And working in suburb and living in city has advantage of going opposite traffic. The suburbs have other advantages they market to just like the city markets to their advantages. Employers choose the location best for them and yes that in a lot of cases may not be in the middle of the city.
