Looking for recommendations from those who have good experience with mechanics. I prefer Chesterfield or south side since that is where we do most of our business, but pretty much anywhere in the greater Richmond area will do.

We've had poor experience... brakes installed upside down, backwards, and switched, alternators installed in the wrong place, transmission fluid used instead of oil in the engine... enough is enough!!

We have about 10 vehicles that need regular maintenance, and I want to be confident that I won't need to replace brakes every month on the same vehicle, or an engine every 3 months because of improper work.

Help me out, please.

I disagree. Anybody that can install brakes upside down and alternators in the wrong place is a miracle worker!

What kind of vehicles are you talking about?

lol! Yes, it was nearly unbelievable!

We have vans: 15-passengers, minivans, wheelchair vans. It really shouldn't be that big of a deal for a good mechanic, I would think, but I'm not taking that for granted anymore! Not every mechanic is a *good* mechanic.

I want to go off of referral instead of trying to hit a target blindfolded.

This is probably one of the best referrals I've ever received:

Pete Abbott
Abbott's Automotive: 804/ 346-5511

Anyway, Pete Abbott is in Short Pump but he's totally worth the drive. Pete is -- I'm guessing -- in his 70's and taking your car to him is like taking your car to beloved uncle or granddad. The guys who work for him are great too. My boys love taking our car in for work because they have a kitty that lives in the office who is very sweet.

Also Pete doesn't nickel-and-dime you. In fact, I took my car in at one point and he didn't even charge me for the time involved to diagnosis the transmission leak. Then he sent me to the greatest transmission guy in Montpelier. It was a bit of a drive, but totally worth it. That guy gave me a great price and did a fantastic job too. (Mountain Road Transmission: 883-8837.)

I promise I'm not related to these people in any way, but finding a great car guy totally made my month.

Good luck,

Alley
