My last vet -- on Ridgefield in Short Pump -- was great. . . until I got her bill: $407 for what turned out to be a urinary tract infection.

In her defense I asked her to do a blood test -- but I also asked her to watch the price since we're not rolling in dough right now. She agreed.

The pills alone -- to handle a UTI -- were $70 with a $40 mark up it turns out. (What's wrong with amoxicyllan??)

Yes, I'm still angry.

I need a vet who is wonderful, but responsible about explaining the itemization of the billing before the billing arrives at the front desk.

Please don't get me wrong: I've spent thousands on my dogs through the years. And cats. But to not tell someone that a bill is going to be in the hundreds seems very unprofessional. (And dumb too because now I'm just mad. I would have been a regular customer.)

Okay, vent over.

Can't say I ever negotiated fees, but for real-time AMAZING care, I can recommend both Mark and Kelly Gottschalk (and the rest of the practice) at Wellesley Animal Hospital. (Link: Wellesley Animal HospitalHome) AND Lori Elliott and Jim DeBell at Shady Grove Animal Clinic. (Link: Welcome to Shady Grove Animal Clinic)

As our beloved Jack Russell went through kidney failure and more generalized end-of-life issues, both offered a practical array of recommendations, optional specialists, and minimally invasive procedures.

We were astonished *TWICE* on Christmas Eve in 2009, when principals at both practices called to see how Wallis was doing. (Neither of us would have expected our HUMAN primary care docs to call for similar updates!) She saw clinicians at both practices until March, when everybody agreed her best interests were not being served. (Sorry, I know that's a touchy issue, but as Kelly Gottschalk told me early on, "The owner ALWAYS knows . . . ."

I recommend both/either of these practices without hesitation.

Best of luck.

I go to Shady Grove as well. Although I use Dr. Lucas. I have heard from several different sources that Dr. Elliot is wonderful! Good luck to you.

I use Dr. Elliott at Shady Grove (whynot recommended her to me several years ago). I have an older Bichon who is a chronic stoner (bladder stones) and is on antibiotics right now ($16) for a bladder infection. She's operated on her (cystotomy) and it cost me half of what I paid in FL for the same surgery. She is very compassionate and knowledgeable and I wouldn't take my dogs anywhere else.

Springfield Vet Ctr.

But if want an excellent vet and an extremely lower bill then go see Dr Larrick at Powhatan Animal Ctr.

A million thank you's to every great person on here who recommended Shady Grove Animal Clinic.

I needed a last minute appointment as was given Dr. Garland. She was wonderful. The office visit was $45, the urinalysis was $40 and the meds were $10.

They office seems super respectful of patients, very kind to animals -- they even had two rescue kittens waiting for homes in their waiting room. (Not just wandering around -- they had a nice set up for them.)

Anyway: THANK YOU!!! (Isn't it funny what makes adults ecstatic?!)

Glad you had such a great experience! I feel very comfortable there and the last time my dog was bit by something (spider?) meds were also only $10 which is a huge change from what our old vet in Nova charged!
