We often discuss on here whether or not to give money to homeless people. Well, on Friday night, while stopped at the traffic light at the Broad Street & Elmwood Ave split, a guy got stabbed by a homeless person after refusing to give money. There's a traffic island there, and homeless people hang out there and solicit money from cars that are stopped at the traffic light.

This happened where the West End, Elmwood, and Upper South Providence meet. As a point of reference, it's just a few blocks from Long Live Beerworks.

Man asking for money stabs passenger in passing car, Providence police say

"The driver told police they were at a traffic light where Broad Street and Elmwood Avenue split when a man approached her car. He asked for money at her window, but Gonzalez “became upset” and an argument broke out, police said.

The suspect went over to Gonzalez’s door, and Gonzalez got out. A fight started, and the man drew a knife and slashed at Gonzalez, the driver said."

Apparently this Gonzalez guy was covered in blood but didn't want any help from the police.

No, a this Gonzalez got stabbed by a homeless person after getting out of the car and assaulting him. I'm surprised the police didn't insist on "helping" him.

We don't know that. The homeless guy knew Gonzalez "became upset" before going over to his door. They had already been arguing.

It doesn't sound to me like the homeless guy was just defending himself.

Why did the homeless guy go over to Gonzalez's door during an argument (and knowing Gonzalez was upset)?

do people get keyed for not giving?

Panhandling degrades a city, imagine if there were one on every intersection including trendy east side?

There are plenty on Thayer Street. They're typically asking people walking though.

Not sure about getting keyed for not giving.

The worst is the people who try to wash your windows while stuck in traffic (or on exit ramps) in NYC.
