The City of Warwick will never accept an airport name with Providence in it. The name of Warwick would never work because few people outside of RI have ever heard of it. Rhode Island is being proposed as part of the name because they want a location in the name and it would not offend Warwick.

I'm not sure they really have much of a say, being that it's a state owned/run airport. As another pointed out, the "Cincinatti" airport is in Kentucky. Never been an issue there.

I love Providence, but on the world transportation stage, it isn't even a unremarkably modest "Cincinnati" which is a city of almost 300,000 residents and has a metro population of over 2,000,000. The name of the airport will likely be Rhode Island International Airport, not to dis our beloved capitol city, but because it makes sense for our very tiny state.

while the metro areas are almost equal, 2 mill to 1.6 mill, Cincinnati had a larger population as did Providence. The main focus is what will appear on departure and arrival boards at other airports. They will not say Rhode Island International Airport, but Providence. Cities are always mentioned, except for NYC-LGA and JFK.

It will probably be PVD - Rhode Island International Airport.
