Yes, car tax is tax deductible.

I don't believe it's specifically earmarked for anything, but all the money comes from the same place and they have to pay for the $40 million road bond somehow.

Well here it is for Providence... whoop de doo...... a big 5%

2017 Car Tax Phase-Out
2017 TAX YEAR – BEGINNING OF THE CAR TAX PHASE-OUT

Due to a change in the state law on excise tax, a phase-out of the tax on motor vehicles is beginning in the 2017 tax year.

Beginning with the 2017 tax, vehicles over 15 years old (2002 model year and older) will not be taxed. All other vehicles will be assessed at 5% less than the full NADA value.

It continues reducing the taxable value and maximum rates and raising the minimum exemptions through 2023, with the tax completely eliminated in 2024

I'd much rather get the car tax issue improved since state college tuition is already fairly reasonable and the schools offer scholarships- what say you?
Classic boomer thought. the carless young people trying to create a life for themselves!
Amirite???

No mention of the larger issue. CCRI will be subsidized, but unfortunately it looks like free tuition to four-year state schools was sacrificed to the car tax gods.

You can mail your car tax to me if you'd like to continue paying it.

Many people are forced to own a vehicle. Nobody is forced to attend URI. That is the difference.

I own three vehicles and haven't found excise taxes to be such a hardship. Tuition - even part-time, in-state, and supplemented with an on-campus tutoring job, on the other hand, is slightly more onerous.

A four-year college degree is increasingly important for anyone who hopes to make a good living. Yes, there are good careers that don't require a degree, but the difference in income between people with and without a four-year degree is getting larger, not smaller.

Car tax.

If Madam Governor wishes to improve education is needs to be at K-12 level.

And monies need to be spent on STEM programs. For that is the future.

The best I've been able to determine - is only 5 RI high schools have STEM programs:

Classical, E Greenwich, Narragansett, Barrington and Portsmouth. I haven't come across any others.

Students with good grades don't have problems finding tuition assistance.
