Taunton definitely has more run down areas, I wouldn't recommend Taunton.
But there are some very nice family areas in Attleboro (North Attleboro an Attleboro itself). Not so in South Attleboro MA probably due to the fact that the Pawtucket RI area gritty population has bled into So. Attleboro over the years. The Attleboros are quite family oriented as well, great sports programs for the kids, and more of a suburban lifestyle, easy highway access etc.
The town of North Attleborough is good, the city of Attleboro - not so much.

Sorry Casey, that is not accurate. The CITY / downtown Attleboro itself or near Sturdy Hosp. is not that great, but there are some lovely subdivisions and nice homes in Attleboro. I have relatives who live in one area where the homes are worth over a half million if you're going by price. Over near the old Texas Instruments are also some very nice areas. Some very nice areas on the Attleboro/Seekonk and Attleboro/Rehoboth line are very nice as well.
I can't name all of the streets, but you cannot compare any 'downtown' to the close-in rural areas. West St. in Attleboro is a good example, and has some very pretty neighborhoods, Rome Blvd., areas leading out of Pleasant St., areas heading toward Norton etc. Etc. etc.
Yes, but the OP has a child and I presume he will want good schools? Attleboro isn't somewhere to look unless he wants to use Bishop Feehan. The Attleboro public schools are not good.

What is your personal experience with the Attleboro public schools Casey?
Either way, the schools there are better than East Providence or North Providence. And WAY better than the Providence, Pawtucket or Woonsocket schools.
I'm looking at the City-Data homepage for Attleboro and the high school gets a 32 out of 100. I believe 10 years ago or so the graduation rate was 40%. I don't know what the problem is there.

TEN years ago ! and even that statement is anecdotal.
I believe the OP can do some current research; however, they have said they would rather be in RI. They gave no reason why. At their price budget for a home, they may not be able to afford one of the best school systems in the state unless they can find something in Cumberland.
For the benefit of the OP and others, it would be helpful to give the actual date of the City-Data figures.

Their MCAS scores tend to be at or above the state average, higher than just about any other city.
