My business is in the service industry. Too established to move. Otherwise, I'd be out of here. The political shenanigans, high taxes and fees coming at us at every corner is the main reason why I'll leave someday.
My family and friends. I wouldn't leave for a job offer elsewhere. No one ever looks back at their life and wishes they had spent more time at work and less time with family so....no.
My house, I really like my house. When I do travel, usually to El Paso, Austin, Las Vegas, San Diego, LA, or Arizona, (usually for casinos) I love being there, I've wanted to move away from here, ever since I was a kid. But, I will admit, you don't really appreciate RI until you leave it, you have to be away for awhile to realize it. You do end up taking a lot for granted, not realizing what you have, until its gone. Namely, the diversity of things to do, and places to go here.
The fact that I love the state! Providence is an absolutely classic New England city with a great urban landscape to live and work, I have great neighbors, am 45 min from Boston, 4 hours from NYC, and the cost of living is dirt cheap compared to other cities.
The art scene here is top notch, food scene is even better, I can walk the city, and can be at a beach or Newport in 30 min.
Providence, Newport, Narragansett, watch hill, little Compton, Pawtuxet Village, Bristol, wickford village, etc... All those awesome places are all in a small footprint.
Eating fresh oysters at matunuck oyster bar, clam cakes, chowder, etc... Some of the best sea food in te country is right here.
Having a night cap at the Avery, Justine's, the Eddy, or one of the other great places to have a nice drink and conversation with friends and family.
The Victorian architecture that we have so much of here vs other parts of the country.
Things I love about this state: The ocean, the beaches, Beavertail, Breton Point park, Colt State park, pretty scenery, lots of cultural attractions. RI is a terrific place to live…if you have money.
I am getting very sick of this state, though. I'm tired of how expensive it is to live here. The cost of living is killer. I'm very weary of the winters here. I'm tired of the inept and corrupt politicians. I'm tired of the bad roads and crumbling infrastructure. I'm getting sick of the congestion and traffic. The economy and poor employment prospects of the state is getting me down. Several of my friends have lost jobs due to the economy in recent years. I'm tired of all the alcoholism that I encounter (maybe it's me, but I know more than my share of alcoholics - BTW, I don't drink). I'm tired of the culture of Depression and apathy that seems to engulf so many people in RI. Someday, I will retire elsewhere. But for now, I will not pull my elementary school child from her life and friends.
There are so many fun things to do in RI -- too bad it's becoming prohibitively expensive to do many of them….
