Today is the day.

After 48 years of work, I'm now retiring at 63. Felt very odd waking up and thinking this is my last day. Well, sort of. As I am the only one, in the company I work for, who does what I do, and have been for the past 10 years, it's going to be a big loss for them. They've already hired two people, who I've been training the past few months, to fill the gap. And looking to hire a third.

With that said, I will be contracting with them for the next month or so, on my terms, on how to do what I do. I really have no idea how they are going to deal with the 150+ companies that I solely support, but I've been training my boss and others since I gave notice six weeks ago. And it is a very amicable departure.

Independence Day will have a whole new meaning for me this year.

Cheers,
jtjgr

Congratulations on your retirement and Happy Independence Day! Kudos to you also for leaving on amicable terms and doing what you could do to ease the transition for your coworkers. You will be well regarded because of that. It's nice that you'll be able to do some consulting work for them on your terms. That's the way to do it!

What enjoyable things do you have planned? How will you celebrate this first day of freedom?

Honestly, I have no big plans. We have family coming to a BBQ on the 4th, so I imagine there will be some imbibing going on. DW plans to work for another year. Then we'll do big things. In the meantime, a lot of Honey-Dos planned, I'm sure. I live about 1.5 miles from the beach and probably haven't just gone down to sit and relax in over 10 years. So that's on the agenda.

Congratulations! My big celebration was not turning on my alarm clock Monday morning after retiring on a Friday. And I don’t mean that sarcastically. Not setting an alarm remains a daily celebration 11 years later.

That sounds like an excellent plan. Relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor.
