Quite simply:

Caveat emptor.
Buyer beware.

They thought they could get away with it, and I'd venture that when one runs out of "freebie tokens" to play, and the player needs to buy more.. I'm fairly positive it will give out a big bold banner to "buy more", but the disclaimer that "cannot be redeemed as cash" is in tiny or buried print.

They, the game producers are BETTING those "hooked or addicted " WILL buy more tokens.

My state (NY) passed legalized sports betting to start this year. Yes, one can bet with real money, and redeem as cash the winnings.
We were absolutely inundated with ads every commercial set for these apps/games.
One was absolutely ridiculous to both spouse and I.
The other boldly claimed "a $5 bet is an automatic $100 win!"
I guarantee you, though, that while they may have to pay out $100, that before they do, that they offer something like multiple chances to "parlay your $100 win into a bigger bet'..of something like that, to get the bettor to risk...and lose..it so they don't have to pay out.

Actual legal casinos often give "freebies' to get players to spend more, and while it may all be a "chance game", we know the "house" is usually pretty much guaranteed to win more than even it's biggest players.
That should be absolutely plain to any prospective"customer ". Why? How? Easy: a casino house who loses frequently, often, (or any such adjective) WON'T stay in business!!

They are betting on those who may may have addiction tendencies to become"hooked" and spend needless money...to line their pockets.

If you fall for it, it's on you.
While you may think you are "tricked" into spending real cash money...they you SHOULD lose that money.

You have multiple choices to NOT lose money:
1) don't download the app, or open the website, PERIOD.
2) DON'T play more than the "freebies'" allow
3) stop and shut down the app/website, either for the day or permanently once you realize you've been hoodwinked the FIRST time to lose cash.
4) to NOT connect/link a CC or bank account to the site/app.

IF YOU CHOOSE to spend money on the game/s...YOU DESERVE to LOSE. It's ALL ON YOU.
Consider it a LESSON LEARNED.
(OR "a FOOL and his MONEY are soon parted"

I disagree with the judgment against the companies. The only judgement I'd agree with Is that they simply shut down such platforms. Or make them banned going forward within such states where online betting is illegal.

This can be parallel to Publishers Clearing House: NO purchase necessary to enter. There's USPS snail mail flyers...read carefully, do all required to make your return mailed entry valid, send it in.
I'll occasionally mail one back for fun 100% NOT expecting to win. (Lol I DID get a "winning check" for $2.00 once).
They have an app, though, it is ABSOLUTELY harder to wade through pages upon pages to get the entry done on the app.. correctly...so it will "count".
It's also easy to accidentally click something that the app registers as a "purchase" and it can show up at your door...with a bill attached.
I deleted the app..for three reasons: 1) it was too complicated as I noted above:;
2) I DID get an "accidentally clicked "order" once;
3) it's a time washer..to long to wade through the pages... carefully...to get a valid entry made. (I have better things to do with my time)

That's MY thoughts, YMMV.

Best

I don't play online. I do like to play the slots at the casinos. I know they are a losing proposition, but I view it as entertainment. I lose money, and sometimes I win money. I don't have any problem walking away from it. On our cruise last month I got $300 casino credit to play with, so I tried to make it last as long as I could. Any winnings went towards our onboard bill.

My statistics professor had done statistical analysis on almost all the games of chance available at the big casinos, which at the time in the US were mainly in Nevada. He knew the ins and outs of card counting and how the odds were set with automated games (slots, 21, poker). The probability of outcomes on craps and roulette were probably the most complex. The end result of multiple plays was always the same - the house wins.

Using games of chance to explain statistics is an excellent method of teaching.

Me either. I lost five bucks at the horse races once, a work buddy talked me into going. I never had any interest in horse races. He was all hyped about it.
I never bet on anything again. Gambling just ain't one of my vices.

That said, when going through the Las Vegas airport once I saw an older lady who could NOT keep her hands off the machines. Her family was with her, they had to physically pull her off the machines and march her toward wherever they were going. She had it BAD.

I worked as a statistician for years and I enjoy going to my local casino once a week, usually less, and have managed to mostly break even, thanks to a couple big wins. My local casino is non-smoking and is the cleanest one I have ever visited. They have removed about 1/3 of the slot machines to create a social distancing environment. I am not a high-roller and I'm enticed by the randomness or seeming lack of randomness at times. I also have a favorite free on-line slot site that I waste time on once in a while. It has a variety of games, but I would not pay to use on-line sites. I just checked and I'm up 260 million points (fake pennies or dollars) so the idea of buying points in order to play on-line is not going to happen.
