Just seeing a neighbor's house from yours doesn't mean it will feel crowded. The topography, how each house sits on its property, and how the house is oriented makes such a difference. A community made up of multiple acre properties could still feel crowded. I own 3 acres and can see two houses...across a small stream valley at a distance. I also have one brand new close neighbor, but there are no windows that look in the direction of their house. I may not be able to see them but I certainly hear them. I'd much rather have a distant but silent house in a view than put up with an invisible but noisy neighbor.
Our lot is only 5000 sq ft, our home is only a little over 1200 sq ft. (Over 55 community)
We had lived in the country with lots of land, pasture, etc. We sold it and moved here because it had become more than we could maintain and we didn't need a house that large. Yes, I can see my neighbors here and it doesn't bother us. In fact it makes us feel a little better, we know they are nearby if we need them.
I’m certain you can buy some shack with some land near a swamp in the boondocks for cheap, you should be happy that few people value that type of property and that you do so that you can acquire it for less than an in town property would be.
Most of the rest of us weigh everything and put up with a little loss of privacy for the benefits of nearby amenities, less land/garden upkeep and services close enough to access them or they us should we need them and, the presence of other people to interact with.
I live on a mere 5500 sf lot, with my side neighbors 8-12’ away and surrounded by houses on lots of similar size. Fortunately I also back up to a huge urban park and canyon, have a large terraced garden to enjoy and surprisingly only see the very tiniest of slices of a couple of corners of the neighbor’s houses, mostly it seems like I live on the edge of the woods though I’m actually walking distance to downtown. Since I love the fact I can walk to everything, am fabulous friends with my neighbors and hang out with them several times a week and like people in general that works for me.
If you want to live like Grizzly Adams though don’t complain that delivery is unavailable or a hospital is two hours away.

How many of you live in a home where you can see your neighbors home from your yard? I've live in a rural area and am looking at homes in Fl. of course and most places are so close together I don't think I could take it. Are most snowbirds from urban areas up North ? I spoke to a Disney employee who developed Disney owned land who said they even stopped 2 car garages so they could get more houses in. It's disgusting to me and I would rather live in a swamp than one of these developments.
I'm in a detached home in an over-55 community with a 1/4-acre lot and can see many neighbors from my yard, but not so much from the house. The houses are designed with privacy aspects in mind. Almost no windows on the sides and garages that jut out in a way so that you can't see neighbors' driveways from your house. We spend a lot of time on our front porch and due to the trees, it's hard to see the houses across the street or walkers going by. Often we don't know if our neighbors are home unless we see their trash cans out. The duplexes are designed with driveways and entryways facing opposite directions so that those in one side don't have to see those on the other side coming and going. The lack of a 2-car garage would definitely bother me, though. All homes in our development have 2-car garages, even the smallest attached fourplexes.
I like the proximity. I don't want to feel like I'm all alone, especially during Covid, and enjoy being able to wave to a neighbor.

Yes, that's a little extreme for my taste too, but so what? If you don't like it, don't move there. Some people may like it, some won't. That doesn't make it "disgusting" just because you wouldn't live there. There are other developments in FL, I'm sure, that are not so extreme, and there are many homes not in age restricted developments with large lots. Check it out on any real estate website, just set the filters for lot size at the minimum you would find acceptable.

And...some of them are duplexes, which would be even more for me.
