I just saw this described on FB or another Social Media platform.
A person received a check in the mail for $1300 with no description as to who or why.
They called the phone number listed under the address of the supposed payee and received a "Not Valid Number" or similar message.
The check was drawn on Huntington Bank so they called their local branch seeking info.
They were told that scammers are now issuing these checks strictly to obtain the bank account information of the individuals who cash them. Your account numbers are often printed on the cancelled checks you cash, particularly if deposited. With this info the scammers can initiate withdrawals from the accounts.
Since the stated amount was pretty close to the announced Covid-19 payments we may be seeing more of this.

Any news links to validate this ?
It's well known that FB is a cesspool of rumors and made up stories.
If it's not a real check, no one is going to get your bank info. I am assuming they are counterfeit checks. You could easily do this with a smaller check. I got a couple of mailings from a "charity" that sends out a $2.50 check. I don't cash them because they would then have my bank info. BTW, only charity I ever saw that got zero stars from Charity Navigator.
