^^^There's no such thing as a 'desert yard', If you have a low maintenance or maintenance free yard then there is very little you have to do.
I only have to attend/check on my low maintenance yard with real 'desert' plants about 3 times a year. There has never been a an irrigation problem in over 25 years. Trees rarely need trimming, no raking, rarely trim the bushes, cactus are self caring, never seen a gopher in all the years I've lived here. Weeds are easy to see and control with Roundup after a heavy rain, otherwise not much to do.
Once in awhile I see a coyote chase a rabbit but otherwise no pest problems.

Seriously, at this time of year it’s great and all year round, there are good people, reasonable politics and fun places to go. But I really don’t know if I could survive the summers. When do you mow your lawn, when the coolest it gets is 99?
Amateur. It doesn’t get *really* hot until towards the end of July. Then, there’s no relief until late September or early Oct. Mid-October if we’re unlucky.

My sentence here runs another 2-4 years and then, we’ll trade high temps for high humidity. When I pass, I don’t want my bones to be bleached by the sun!

I thought I saw a gopher the other day but it turned out to be a ground squirrel who'd made a warren in one of my planters. OTOH, I had a visitation this morning from three bobcats.

For heaven's sake don't go on Nextdoor and mention Roundup. Some people -- probably California transplants -- got downright mean and ugly when a neighbor recommended using Roundup for weed abatement.

Most do well in the dry heat once they get used to it, often the heat that people can't stand is with humidity. I don't know that I ever got used to the humid heat in the 3 years we lived in New Orleans.

I despise Cold much more than Heat - we spent 10 years in Chicago area, and a few more in upstate New York and New England - places with the highs for the week below zero - that is much harder on us than a little heat. We much prefer the heat but you may feel differently.

Fluffy, nice picture of a bobcat.
I don’t use Round up. I have a zeriscape garden, no grass here. But I mulch a lot.

Never got used to the very dusty dry heat. We returned to Florida.

We bought our first condo townhouse in 1987, gave away the mower and have not missed it yet.

I was 26 when I moved from NYC to Phoenix in 1972. Got here in November. Saw people walking around in shorts and T-shirts and lounging around the pool. Thought "This is heaven" compared to winters in NYC.

My first summer the temp high was 116 degrees. I survived.

I'm still here.

Great picture BTW!

If you were swimming or sunbathing, would that bobcat be something to fear?

Do they leave people alone?
